Speech language services

About Our Speech Language Services

Solutions of Hickory, PA offers comprehensive speech and language services for both children and adults. Angela Hamilton, M.A., C.C.C. provides individual assessment and treatment services at the practice. Referrals are accepted from pediatricians, teachers, parents, and self-referrals. Our speech and language pathologist has over 30 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders, including the following:

  • Articulation disorders
  • Speech and language delay
  • Fluency disorders (stuttering)
  • Language-based learning difficulties in reading, writing, and spelling
  • Communication deficits associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Every child is unique and parents know their children best. Research in the area of speech/language strongly supports early intervention in the prevention of later problems with behavior, learning, reading, and social relationships. Contact Solutions of Hickory if you have any concerns regarding your child’s ability to communicate with, or understand language, and a complimentary telephone consultation with Mrs. Hamilton will be scheduled. If treatment is needed, it is provided on an individual basis with involvement of the family to assist in reinforcing newly learned skills.

Tutoring

About Our Tutoring Services

Solutions of Hickory, PA is the only area practice that offers individualized tutoring services by a nationally-certified speech and language pathologist.

Angela Hamilton, M.A., C.C.C. offers tutoring in addition to traditional speech and language services to students with language-based learning difficulties. β€œMany of my students with diagnosed language disorders have specific problems with understanding and using written language which presents in poor reading fluency, comprehension and decoding problems, poor spelling, auditory processing and memory problems, and generally disorganized writing skills. Many of these children are diagnosed with dyslexia and need systematic, sequential, and research-based methods to improve their reading and writing skills. I have over 30 years experience working with students with various levels of speech, language, and social-communication needs. I enjoy the challenge of teaching these students the necessary skills to improve their understanding and use of written language which then leads to stronger academic performance in the classroom, and ultimately, in improved self-confidence”. Our tutoring services are not tailored toward β€œhomework help” or limited to specific academic subjects.

Various individualized and multi-sensory methods are used for individual tutoring, such as the Orton Gillingham method, a strong phonemic-based reading and writing program. We are also the only area provider of the RAVE-O reading program, a classroom/individualized curriculum developed by language researchers at Tufts University. Mrs. Hamilton has received hands-on training from the developers of this program and regularly attends continuing educational courses in her areas of expertise.

If you think your child needs language-based tutoring, please call us for an initial assessment and parental interview. Sessions are typically once or twice per week for 45-60 minutes per session, depending on the age (elementary through high school) and needs of the student. Early evening appointments are also available.

FriendBuilders

About Friend Builders

FriendBuilders is a special program for children who experience trouble with making and keeping friends. The program is unique for many reasons: it is led by a psychologist trained in working with children. It incorporates a variety of experiences including team-building skills, behavior management, role-play, videotaping, games, and modeling. It is fun and individualized to the specific needs of the children participating in the group.  Who should apply? The FriendBuilders Program is designed to assist children with immature or poor social skills, social anxiety, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Autism.  How do I apply? Complete the application and return it to Solutions for review and selection.  When does the group take place? The group is offered, for different age groups, in the fall and spring of each year. Groups range from 5 years to 12 years of age, at present. Individual groups are limited to 6 participants, and are also limited to children within 2 years of each other in age. It is 10 sessions in length, with 3 parent sessions included at regular intervals with Dr. Elyse Freilich.  My child is already involved in counseling or tutoring - can he or she participate? This group targets specific skills and needs of children regarding friendships and social relationships. Many children who participate are receiving other services including family or individual counseling, tutoring, speech/occupational therapy, etc.  How will I know if my child is improving? A critical part of the group is your participation. You will receive instruction on how to help your child practice the skills he/she learns, and how to encourage the school to help. You will participate in parent groups to help you understand your child’s progress and learn more about helping him/her.  What are the fees and financial policies? The FriendBuilders group is a social skills therapy group and as such may be reimbursable through your health insurance benefit. Please contact our office for further information on current fees and insurance policies.
